Do I need to apply a primer?

Interior Walls

No, primers are not necessarily required when repainting.  Follow the following directions:

  • Should the wall you need to repaint not require replastering, just follow the cleaning instructions , no Primers needed. If a previously painted wall needs to be replastered, then a Paint Master Water Based Plaster Primer will be required.
  • If your wall is painted with a water based paint and you want to repaint with an oil based paint, or vice versa, you need to apply Paint Master Universal Undercoat.
  • When changing from a dark colour to a light colour, the use of a primer can be beneficial as this will reduce the number of top coats that will need to be applied.

Exterior Walls

Primers are necessary when repainting exterior walls.  Follow the following directions:

  • If a previously painted wall needs to be replastered, then a Paint Master Water Based Plaster Primer will be required.
  • If your wall is painted with a water based paint and you want to repaint one coat bonding liquid will be beneficial.
  • When changing from a dark colour to a light colour, the use of a primer can be beneficial as this will reduce the number of top coats that will need to be applied.

Metal

  • The metal surface needs adhesion in order for the paint to stick. Preparation is key and will include removing all loose particles and paint on the metal surface. Afterwards, your metal surface needs to be washed down with water and left to dry thoroughly.
  • Check whether the surface is rusted. If so, apply Paint Master Rust Converter to the rusted area. Sand down the rusted area, wash down with water and ensure that the surface is rust free.
  • Also ensure that the surface is free of dust and dirt.
  • Now prime the clean metal with Paint Master Water Based Metal Primer, one coat is sufficient. If you stay at the coast, it is best to apply 2 coats of Metal Primer. The spreading rate is approximately 7 m2 per litre. The Primer will take 24 hours to hard dry.

Ceilings

It is recommended to prime a previously painted ceiling with Universal Undercoat, leave to cure for 24 hours and then apply 2 coats of Paint Master Hi Cover.
